Record Hill is a four-mile ridge that runs through the town of Roxbury in Oxford County, Maine. Oriented roughly north to south, the ridge line is perfectly positioned to capture the region's prevailing westerly winds as they blow through from Canada and neighboring New Hampshire. Historically, this area has been used for timber production, and the land surrounding Record Hill is independently certified as sustainably managed.
Record Hill Wind is a 50.6 megawatt wind project consisting of 22 Siemens SWT-2.3-93 turbines arrayed along the ridgeline that connects Partridge Peak, Record Hill, and Flathead Mountain. Project Map The electrical output of the project is estimated to be approximately 122 million kilowatt hours per year, nearly equivalent to the electricity needs of every household in Oxford County.
RHW began in 2007 as a partnership between Independence Wind and Wagner Forest Management. Over the next two years RHW held at least 27 public meetings to ensure that the residents of Oxford County were well informed about the project. Two town-wide votes affirmed local support for the project. The Department of Environmental Protection of the State of Maine granted approval to RHW to begin project construction in August 2009. The project's primary phase of construction will begin in Spring 2011, with turbine delivery occurring in late summer. RHW expects the wind farm to begin producing green energy by the end of 2011.
